Portland Trail Blazers Guard CJ McCollum has proven himself to be a standout professional, both on and off the court.
A native of Canton, Ohio, CJ attended Lehigh University. At Lehigh, CJ was a member of the Men’s basketball team, where he was an impact player from the time that he stepped on campus. He was named Patriot League Player of the Year in both his Freshman and Junior years. He was also a 2x Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American and holds the record as the all-time scorer in the Patriot League.
It was also at Lehigh that CJ began to develop his interests in journalism. CJ majored in journalism and served as an assistant editor for Lehigh’s student newspaper, The Brown and White. CJ graduated from Lehigh in 2013.
Professionally, CJ is in his fourth season with the Portland Trail Blazers after being drafted as the 10th pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. The 2015-2016 season served as a breakout year for CJ with him being named as the NBA’s Most Improved Player.
While in the NBA, CJ has continued his work in the journalism field, writing for major media outlets such as The Players’ Tribune, Sports Illustrated for Kids and NBA.com. CJ also hosts two radio shows each week during the season in Portland, hosted Facebook Live events for the NBA during the NBA Finals and has served as a guest on ESPN’s Sports Center.
CJ has also developed his identity as a philanthropist. In Portland, CJ runs two major community platforms – The CJ’s Press Pass program, a journalism-based mentorship program for Portland Public Schools high school students and the CJ McCollum Dream Center Initiative, where he partners with Boys & Girls Clubs to open innovative spaces that encourage young people to learn, explore, create and grow.
