Spring training is my favorite time of the year. I have been coming down to Arizona to photograph Cactus League baseball since 1991. Back then, it was with film cameras. This year, I have been shooting with my iPhone. What a difference 25 years makes! Of course, I still shoot action pictures and the majority of my assignments with my professional-level 35mm digital cameras, but for fun I take out my iPhone 6 Plus to try and discover a different look at the game I love so much. I drove all over the Phoenix valley shooting portraits of players just after sunrise during the annual ritual of photo days. This is when the clubs, newspapers, wire services and trading card companies set up portable studios to photograph all the players. Me? I was there with just my iPhone trying to make do with whatever light I had. The results were some of the best pictures I’ve made in a long time.
